U.S. Coast Guard-approved safety equipment is required on all recreational boats. Some equipment requirements are listed below. In addition to the equipment below, other requirements, such as muffling devices and flags for water-skiing are outlined in the 2013 Boating Statutes & Regulations. Boat patrols conduct routine safety inspections while patrolling waters, and courtesy inspections are conducted at boat docks. Vessel operators may also request courtesy inspections.

Certain Type I pfd's have been identified by the US Coast Guard as potentially not being assembled correctly during production and could create a hazard when attempting to don them during an emergency. This is not a recall, but an alert. More details can be found here.
