Sand Creek Natural Area contains unique geologic formations with a montane riparian willow thicket community in good condition. The area also includes pillars and monuments of Paleozoic (Fountain Formation) cross-bedded sandstone (dune origin) and "topple blocks".  There is a clear exposure of an unconformity between the top of the Sherman granite (1.7 byo) and the bottom of the Fountain Fm (270 myo). Sandhill cranes use the area for nesting. The area is extremely scenic. Part of a National Natural Landmark.
