Forest Management
The Colorado wildfires of 2000-2002 demonstrated how quick and devastating wildfires can be. Colorado State Parks works very closely with the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) and leverages Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) funding in a unique cooperative project. The goal is to conduct work in and around our State Parks, working with neighbors on a landscape scale to reduce the risk of wildfires and improve forest resiliency to insect and disease epidemics.
This partnership has been very successful and due to its demonstrated track record of careful planning and efficient implementation, CSFS has received a $2.5 million dollar grant from FEMA that is the first of its kind for proactive watershed protection. This grant will fund fuels mitigation projects at 7 parks through 2010!
