Fuels Mitigation Success Stories

Since 2001, several major projects have been designated to significantly reduce the fire hazard at eight State Parks.  Nearly 900 acres have been treated with another 8,000 acres in development at 11 State Parks.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Project Highlights:

  • Over the next 10 years, more than 3,000 acres of the forest will be treated, either through thinning or prescribed burning.
  • Will create 5 major fuel breaks
  • Will significantly reduce the risk and intensity of wildfire

Project Accomplishments:

  • Protected the park from fire by creating a series of hazard fuel reduction units along the Park's north and west side that will collectively shield the park.
  • Thinned 200 acres of forest along mtn. Base and Gap Roads and within the Reverend's Ridge Campground.
  • Improved scenic quality and wildlife habitat by converting some areas from conifer to aspen.
  • Improved safety of evacuation routes.
