Statutes and Regulations

All Colorado Division of Wildlife State Laws and Regulations are in effect. You are responsible for knowing those that apply to you. Among those are:

  1. In most areas you may fire only to the EAST! You may not shoot to the north, south, or west. The exception is in the middle of the "Swim Beach" red zone: you may shoot east or south. You cannot shoot to the North in this area.
  2. Be aware of safety and hunting etiquette. Safety ALWAYS takes priority over any hunting opportunity! To keep the privilege of hunting at Boyd Lake State Park, YOU need to be responsible and keep a good relationship with our neighbors, and your fellow hunters.
  3. Hunt within designated Red Zone Areas only! It is your responsibility to know where the RED ZONES are. These boundaries are marked on the map in red and at the hunting site on white signs with red letters. The water line is a boundary. Stop by the Park Office for map, call for hours ahead of time at (970) 669-1739.
  4. Placing and retrieving decoys, and retrieving game are allowed in the Lake. However, no hunting is allowed from the water.
  5. Firearms must be unloaded outside the Red Zone areas. You may load your weapon only when in position, and ready to hunt inside Red Zone. You must unload before returning to your vehicle.
  6. You may not drive to the Red Zones -- you must keep your vehicle within the designated asphalt parking areas. You must walk all of your hunting equipment down to the site.
  7. Shooting is allowed ½ hour before sunrise to sunset.
  8. You must have your valid license (Small Game, Federal Duck Stamp, Colorado Waterfowl Stamp, and HIP number), hunter safety card and photo identification on your person while hunting. These may be inspected at any time by any Colorado Peace Officer.
  9. Only non-toxic shot is allowed. You cannot use, or even have in your possession, lead shot, while hunting at Boyd Lake State Park.
