Biking

A paved trail follows all of the main roads in the park. If you catch the trail in Rock Canyon, you can bike along the river to the Nature Center and catch trails that go throughout Pueblo. The extensive trail system behind Arkansas Point Campground offers several degrees of difficulty, for mountain bikers of all ages. For your safety, we do ask that bikes remain on the trails. There is a new map with the new trails located at the kiosk at Arkansas Point Campground.

Boating

New Boat Ramp Hours- April 15, 2009 to Oct 15, 2009 the boat ramp hours have been extended to 5am to 11pm. Then, Oct 16, 2009 to April 14, 2010 the ramps will be open between 5am to 6pm. No loading or unloading of vessels will be allowed after hours. Peak loading and launching hours are 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Plenty of water and plenty of room equals one of the best boating lakes in the state. While water levels are higher than normal, the ramps are in the water and there is still plenty of room to enjoy. Camping

The park is one of the most popular camping destinations in Colorado. Year-round campgrounds are close to the city of Pueblo and only a short drive from major shopping areas, the Colorado State Fair, the Pueblo Zoo, and a number of attractions. Canon City and the Royal Gorge are less than one hour from the park. San Isabel Lake and the beauty of the mountains are less than 30 minutes away. Education Programs

Lake Pueblo offers a wide variety of educational programs for all ages. Attend wildlife films in the Visitor’s Center Auditorium or learn about Lake Pueblo’s environment at the amphitheater. Take a guided tour along one of the many nature trails or walk under the stars on our Star Light walks. Parks activities are posted throughout the park.

Fishing

Lake Pueblo is a Colorado fishing "hot spot" according to the Colorado Division of Wildlife fishing guide on the shore or by boat, anglers can reel in: trout, walleye, large and smallmouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, wiper (a cross between white bass and stripe bass), bluegill, and yellow perch. Group Camping

There are 17 group campsites available at Northern Plains. There are three separate loops available. One loop with 4, one with 6, and one with 7 sites. You can rent one, two, or all loops. The sites are $18 each but sold as the entire loop. You must reserve through the Pueblo Visitor's Center. Reserve soon, they fill fast! 719-561-9320 ext. 10. Hiking

Take the paved trial around the park or along the Arkansas River, or get a spectacular view on the top of Arkansas Point trail. A trail map is located at the kiosk at Arkansas Point Campground. There is also a trail over on the north side, trail head at West Fishing Road. This trail follows the shore and can go beyond. Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is allowed on the Arkansas Point Trail System. Park in the lot at Arkansas Point Campground and ride up into the bluffs for a bird's-eye view. Please note that some trails allow equestrian use and others do not. Horses are welcome for day-trips, but not allowed in the campgrounds for over-night stays.

Hunting

Small game and waterfowl hunting is permitted in designed hunting areas during legal seasons after Labor Day. The Colorado Division of Wildlife (http://wildlife.state.co.us) can provide more information on hunting regulations. Go to Lake Pueblo Publications for a map of the areas where hunting is permitted on the park.

Picnicking

Lake Pueblo provides perfect picnic spots. Park a cooler and picnic gear at one of the 348 sites located throughout the park. Rock Canyon Day-Use Area offers the most popular sites. Anticline Pond (also known as Rock Canyon Pond) provides fun and easy day fishing from a stocked fishing pond and is close to a playground. Osprey is a shady, quiet area nestled along the river. Picnic sites over-looking the reservoir are at the South Marina, at North Picnic, and at West Fishing areas.

Sailboarding

Swimming

Rock Canyon Swim Beach boasts a large sandy beach, shaded individual and group picnic areas with grills, a locker/shower room, and plenty of room for swimming. Pets are not allowed in the Swim Beach area. Rock Canyon Swim beach is closed for the 2009 season. The swim beach will re-open for the 2010 season on May 29, 2010. The water slide and concession stand are no longer available.

Whitewater rafting

The Arkansas River below the dam provides the adventurer an opportunity for kayaking and rafting. Life preservers are required when sporting on the river.

Winter Camping

Juniper Breaks Loop D Campground is open year-round. Limited electrical sites (#'s 1-27 & 91-92) are available in Arkansas Point throughout the year, but laundry and showers are closed during winter months. The sites in Arkansas Point are reservable and it is recommended due to the limited number of sites available. Other sites open in Arkansas Point April 1st--Prairie Ridge campground opens April 1st and Yucca Flats opens May 1st these campgrounds remain open until September 30.
