Check this site frequently for updates and announcements.

The first phase of Staunton State Park development, which will open the Park to the public for day use at a date to be determined in 2012, is being funded by a $5 million grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO). Phase I construction, which will enable visitors to enjoy activities such as picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and rock climbing, includes:

Construction at Staunton
  • A new entrance
  • Roads
  • Parking lots
  • Restrooms
  • Utilities
  • Multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding
  • Hiker-only trails

Facility locations have been identified and road and trail routes have been marked. Construction is taking place as weather permits.

In future development phases, extending through 2020, there will be overnight camping and Park use will be available year round.

Frances H. Staunton stipulated in her will that her ranch, as a state park, be "...maintained to the maximum extent practical in an undeveloped state" and that no more than 10% of the land area be developed. Accordingly, Staunton State Park is being developed using a 21st century, community based plan designed to protect the pristine landscape. For example, construction equipment is washed regularly to prevent the spread of weeds from one area of the Park to another.
