Highline Lake State Park
Spring Lift Off from the muddy inlet at Highline Lake

An oasis in the desert, Highline Lake is the recreation epicenter for the Grand Valley with two lakes, lush grass, trails and trees.
No matter the season, Highline Lake State Park is a diverse and welcome retreat. Connected to miles of trails and close to communities, the park makes an ideal base camp for exploring the Grand Junction area.  Whether passing through on mountain bikes, or as an end destination, the park welcomes campers, anglers, families and groups.

Birders have plenty to see here. The Audubon Society designated the park an important bird area; thousands migrate through the area every winter.

Why Visit Now

The ice on Highline Lake is disappearing quickly at the north end!  From the west boat ramp NORTH, there is open water.  However, SOUTH of the west ramp is still ice, including near the dam!  Do not go onto the ice!  Currently, only the NORTH end of Highline is fishable water.
At Mack Mesa, there is open water, except for the southwest corner, including the pierThat ice is melting and is very unstable and unsafe!  Currently, there are no recent reports of any fish being caught at either lake.  Do Not Go Onto the ice at either Highline Lake or Mack Mesa Lake!
 See our conditions page!

We strive to have up-to-date lake and park conditions posted.  Please let us know if something needs to be updated.

Is Winter really gone?

The scenery at Highline Lake changes constantly!  Bring a camera and take a short hike along one of the trails.  Depending on the time of day  and the weather, you might see a few of our large deer herd - 4-point bucks, does and little ones.
Or maybe our resident geese and ducks floating safely and blissfully on the open water of  Highline Lake. The two bald eagles who fish in the open water at both lakes are awesome to watch!
Storms that blow in and around the Bookcliffs create beautiful shadows, making 3-D scenes with  canyons you never noticed before!
Everything changes minute by minute at Highline Lake - Get Outdoors at Highline Lake and just see what you can see!

If Winter is really gone, shall we look forward to Spring?
